Facial recognition technology has become exponentially more sophisticated in the last few years, and consequently is starting to be used by apps and devices left and right. Both law enforcement and the private sector are trying to capitalize on these new capabilities. But what are the privacy implications of a technology that can fully identify us without our knowledge or consent? What about the fact that these technologies have been demonstrated to misidentify people of color? Varoon Mathur of the AI Now Institute will join us to talk about new developments in facial recognition technology, how it relates more broadly to the spread of Artificial Intelligence, and help us understand policy and legal efforts to curtail their use.

Overview

Facial recognition technology has become exponentially more sophisticated in the last few years, and consequently is starting to be used everywhere, by apps, devices, and law enforcement alike. But what are the privacy implications of a technology that can fully identify us without our knowledge or consent? What about the fact that these technologies have been demonstrated to be discriminatory? Varoon Mathur of the AI Now Institute will join us to talk about new developments in facial recognition technology, how it relates more broadly to the increased use of artificial intelligence, and will help us understand policy and legal efforts to prevent these technologies from being used to violate our rights.

  • What the use of this technology means for our rights
  • What policy interventions are possible to give us more control over the use of this technology?
